More than half of the power facilities in Ukraine have been destroyed, causing frequent and extended outages. Homes, schools, orphanages, medical centers, senior homes, and community centers are cold and dark. For the past few years, industrial generators have been the difference between life and death for thousands of people, providing critically needed heat and light.
At the outset of the war, we purchased dozens of heavy duty large units, but after more than three years of heavy use, the units are burning out. That's what happened at the Mishpacha Orphanage in Odessa, leaving more than 100 children without power for hours and even days on end. The youngsters yearn for a warm meal in the morning and light to play by in the afternoon. Hanukkah brought special moments for the kids ages 3 to 18, but it will take years for them to recover from the trauma they have endured for nearly 4 years.
We are trying desperately to buy a new generator for Mishpacha, to relieve the added suffering caused by the lack of power. But with a price tag of $25,000-$30,000 per unit, we can’t do it without help.
The orphanage is just one of many places where a new generator (and fuel) is needed. In cities and towns across Ukraine, Jewish community centers and schools serve as warming centers and gathering places, where people come for a hot meal, to power their communication devices, and to receive emotional support. For some, particularly the elderly and infirm, these facilities are a lifeline, as they cannot survive in their homes without heat.
Funds are desperately needed to replace the large generators that power the Mishpacha orphanage and other essential Jewish communal buildings in Ukraine, and also to buy fuel. From now until the end of the year, donations will be matched dollar for dollar, doubling the impact of your gift. Please help us save lives and restore hope.
