This weekend brought the deadliest attacks on Ukraine so far this year, with 38 people killed and 52 injured, including five children. A drone attack on an ammunition warehouse in the village of Myla, near Kyiv, triggered multiple explosions and fires that swept through dozens of nearby homes and buildings. In all, 300 structures were damaged, including more than 200 houses and 14 apartment blocks. A care home for elderly citizens and people living with disabilities was among the damaged buildings: more than 300 emergency services personnel responded to the scene.
This tragedy comes just weeks after seven people died in a strike on a different ammunition warehouse several miles away, and one day after a 2-year-old girl was killed and 12 others were injured in attacks on Kyiv.
The latest events reignite concerns for the upcoming winter. Last year, Ukraine’s power grid was battered, leaving thousands of people without heat and light in freezing temperatures, for days and even weeks at a time. Many residents fear the coming winter may prove the most challenging yet.
Our leaders, staff, and volunteers are busy responding to the weekend attacks by providing support and assistance to local residents. Additionally, we are intensifying our preparations for the upcoming winter, from preparing the large-scale generators to amassing clothes and critical supplies.
