As the Jews of Ukraine prepare to celebrate the holiday of Sukkot, they are reeling from tragedies that occurred over the weekend. Eleven people died when drones, missiles, and guided aerial bombs struck civilian infrastructure targets across Ukraine. More than 50 ballistic missiles and 500 drones rained down on nine regions. In the Sumy Region, a railway station was targeted, hitting a passenger train, killing one person and wounding 30 others. In the Lviv region, 4 people were killed, including a 15-year-old girl; six people were injured.
In the southern city of Zaporizhzhia, the aerial assault resulted in the death of one woman and injuries to nine others, including a 16-year-old girl. Many residential buildings were destroyed, leaving 73,000 households in Zaporizhzhia and surrounding areas without power.
In Sloviansk, a city in the eastern Donetsk region that remains under Ukrainian control, a guided aerial bomb struck an apartment block, killing six people and injuring many more. More than two dozen residential buildings, as well as cars, shops and a cafe were damaged in the attack.
Our hearts go out to the people of Ukraine. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers, particularly during this Sukkot holiday, as we gather with friends and family under the Sukkah, and give thanks for our many blessings. Together we save lives and restore hope.
