For the past four years, we have been providing substantial assistance to thousands of Jews in Ukraine who are in need of medical care and medications. While the country has been undergoing substantial reforms to their healthcare system for many years, transitioning from a Soviet-era model to a taxpayer-funded to a National Health Service system, the ongoing conflict has made it difficult for many people to receive the care they need.
Ukrainian citizens are entitled to free, state-funded care, and a private sector operates alongside public services especially in larger cities. Patients typically have a primary care doctor and get referrals for specialists. Over the past several years, the system has faced extreme pressure from destroyed infrastructure, medical supply shortages, and a reduced workforce. There is high demand for trauma, rehabilitative, and mental health services, and there are significant shortages of specialized care and medications (especially for heart conditions and pain management).
Our local leaders, staff and volunteers work closely with individuals and families to determine their needs for medical and dental treatment, as well as rehabilitative services, counseling, and medications. In many cases we are able to arrange appointments and secure required equipment and medicine.
We are grateful to our generous donors who make our work possible, ensuring children receive speech therapy, have their cavities filled, and undergo physical therapy. We ensure senior citizens receive their high blood pressure and heart medicine as well as lifesaving surgeries.
Our close connections with people in more than 250 cities, towns, and villages throughout Ukraine allow us to deliver aid to those who need it most, in a timely and effective manner. Together we save lives and restore hope.
