Cherkasy, a mid-size city on the western bank of the Dnipro River, has been targeted many times in the ongoing conflict. The Jewish community, led by Chief Rabbi Dov Axelrod and his wife Chana for nearly 25 years, provides critical assistance to local residents, including shelter, food, and other daily essentials along with emotional and spiritual support. Rabbi and Mrs. Axelrod have welcomed many Jews who were displaced from other parts of the country, providing them safety, stability, and a sense of belonging. Recently, the Mayor of Cherkasy honored Rabbi Axelrod with a prestigious award for his continued extraordinary work.
A few weeks ago, the Jewish community celebrated Purim for the fifth time since the beginning of the crisis. Hundreds of people joined the festivities, including Mayor Anatoliy Bondarenko, who personally presented Rabbi Axelrod with a medal and certificate for “service to the community during wartime.” This award is not the first Rabbi Axelrod has received such recognition, a reflection of the city’s deep appreciation for his unwavering commitment to the people of Cherkasy, and the vital role the Jewish community plays in the city.
Over the past 4 years, Rabbi and Mrs. Axelrod have been a lifeline to local residents. As Mrs. Axelrod noted, “Since the beginning of the crisis, we have witnessed a remarkable awakening among Jews across Ukraine; people who previously did not recognize their Judaism suddenly began appearing at the synagogue, seeking spiritual guidance and material support.”
We appreciate Rabbi Axelrod and his wife for their tireless leadership and the support they provide to so many people, and we thank Mayor Bondarenko for his steadfast support of the Jewish community. Together we save lives and restore hope.
