School children in Zhytomyr spent another day learning, not in classrooms, but in bomb shelters. Just before another large-scale air attack, sirens blared throughout the city, alerting teachers to quickly shuttle the children down to their auxiliary classrooms in the basement. The kids know exactly what is expected of them --move quickly, no talking, leave everything in place, stay calm, and get to the safe harbor.
The process is familiar to students, teachers, and administrators, in Zhytomyr and throughout Ukraine; they have repeated it hundreds of times over the last 3 years. Nevertheless, many of the students, particularly the younger ones, are upset by the disruption and scared by the loud noise and commotion. Teachers do their best to comfort and reassure the kids, even while their own hearts are racing, fearing for the safety of loved ones.
The makeshift classrooms inside the bomb shelters are welcoming environments for the students, complete with snacks, water and learning materials. In the summer of 2022, we worked with local leaders to restore and/or construct bomb shelters for schools across the country. Unlike traditional shelters that hold people for several hours at most, these facilities are designed for students to continue their studies throughout the day, and even into the evening, as needed. Industrial generators provide light and power during disruptions to the energy supply.
We are grateful to the teachers, staff, and administrators who support the school children of Ukraine, with their resilience, determination, and commitment. It is critical to ensure that the younger generation is able to learn, develop, and mature, despite the ongoing crisis. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Zhytomyr and throughout the country who continue to endure unimaginable challenges in their daily lives. Together we save lives and restore hope.
