In recent days, Kyiv and the surrounding region have come under relentless attacks on a scale and intensity never seen before. The air strikes have severely affected civilians, as well as damaging residential and industrial sites. As a result, “First Bell” ceremonies that mark the opening of the new school year, traditionally held on September 1st, were moved to bomb shelters and other protected spaces. Deep anxiety has gripped parents and children alike, including thousands of members of the Jewish community, making it difficult to enjoy this milestone in their children’s lives.
In other parts of the country, thousands of students attending nursery school, kindergartens, elementary and secondary schools—began the new academic year with excitement and joy following the long summer break. In Dnipro, the symbol of this year’s celebration was a paper airplane, like a small dream waiting to be given wings, reminding children that a dream comes true through belief, knowledge, effort, and the support of those around them. The highlight of the celebration occurred at the ringing of the first bell, when the first graders and eleventh graders together launched paper airplanes, a symbol of dreams for students just beginning their school journey and those who are nearing the end.
It was an honor and privilege to provide kids with new backpacks, school supplies, clothes, and shoes. Many of the parents can barely afford daily essentials; they were immensely grateful for the joy on their children' s faces. We hope for an engaging, and peaceful school year full of new discoveries!
