Seventy boys from across Ukraine enjoyed a week of fun surrounded by professional staff and volunteers at the Yeka Passover Camp in Zhytomyr. Thanks to supporters from around the world and the local Jewish community led by Chief Rabbi Shlomo Wilhelm, the camp provided the boys with a warm and welcoming environment where they connected with peers and reinforced their Jewish identity, during a very difficult time in their lives.
Despite complex travel conditions, children ultimately arrived from across the country, and they were joined by a dedicated team of counselors and young adults who traveled from all across Europe, the United States, and Australia. Throughout each day, every child received individual attention and support to foster a sense of belonging and stability. The program combined engaging informal lessons in Jewish tradition with hands-on workshops, holiday preparations, sports, excursions, and social activities, all designed to build confidence and Jewish pride.
Sadly, camp attendees were reminded of the ongoing conflict when an early morning alert, on the first day, required campers and staff to move to a shelter. The situation was handled with sensitivity, turning a difficult moment into one of unity and resilience as the counselors and leaders reassured the kids, playing games and engaging in other group activities.
The Passover Seder was the highlight of the camp. It offered the boys a fun experience that included many traditions and a lot of food. The camp continued through the Shabbat following Passover, and the boys participated in challah baking, as well as uplifting prayers, songs, and festive meals. After enjoying a wonderful week of camaraderie and fun, the boys returned safely to their homes.
We are grateful to everyone who made this year’s Yeka camp a success. Together we save lives and restore hope.
