(A message received from a JRNU staff member in Ukraine)
Good morning,
Unfortunately, the Jewish Communities in Kyiv and other cities in Ukraine experienced a horrific night ending with heavy damage, but also miracles, and urgent relief efforts.
Missiles were flying, one after the other, the entire night. A truly horrific night for the residents of Kyiv and major cities in Ukraine. They were targeting the power stations.
The missile strikes hit power and electricity infrastructure in Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro, and Kyiv. Millions were left exposed to harsh weather without electricity, heating, or refrigeration, and still face major disruptions to running water. The hospitals raised their alert level and are now forced to reduce operations, putting lives at risk.
The schools are now closed, and a deep sense of fear and uncertainty spread among residents — the worst in many months.
In Zaporizhzhia, a Jewish family’s home suffered severe damage, while large fires broke out near the synagogue and community center. Only by a miracle were these central Jewish institutions spared.
Artillery fire also struck a main bridge in the city, causing significant damage.
At this time, the generators we purchased for the communities are proving their efficiency — the Jewish centers are now serving and assisting all community members in need, providing electricity, heating, and the ability to cook.
Despite the tension, the Jewish community hopes to celebrate the remainder of Sukkot and Simchat Torah together in safety.
A similar miracle occurred in Kherson, when a deadly cluster bomb — which caused extensive damage throughout the city — struck the outer wall of the synagogue. Though the building itself was unharmed, the incident left the local Jewish population shaken. The bomb had scattered dozens of smaller explosives that caused widespread destruction before stopping just short of the Jewish Community Center.
With blessings and hope for better days,
Shabbat Shalom and Chag Sameach!
